Marianne Nilsson: Almedahls Herring, Fish Patterns

Huset
, is a little shop specializing in both modern and vintage Scandinavian designs and also the place where I got my Maria Dahlgren’s breakfast trays from. I was looking at their web store and am especially drawn to the other designer’s retro fish patterns by Almedahls Herring.

“Designed by Marianne Nilsson in the 1950s, this simple iconic herring graphic print from textile company Almedahls is quint essentially Swedish (with their love of pickled herring) – yet with its nautical colours and bold shapes it looks as fresh as ever.”

As far as I know, Huset is the only place carrying this vintage Almedahls Herring Fabric shown above. They are made of 50 percent linen and 50 percent cotton (58.5 inches wide), and it is available for $30 per yard at Huset. Time for me to bring out my old sewing kit! By the way, Huset means “the house” in Swedish, Danish and Norwegian.

Sori Yanagi: Steel Cutlery & Kitchen Tools

Sori Yanagi, a pioneer of Japanese industrial design is probably best known for his butterfly stool that is registered as one of the permanent design collections at the MOMA museum in New York.

His cutlery work are good examples to show the way he approach his design focusing on simplicity and function. The small spoon & fork sets that I picked up from Japan has a clean contour, simple shape, and the perfect amount of thickness.

One thing I like most about his cutlery is that it fits nicely in your hand and is the perfect size to enjoy your favorite dessert!
